In the 90’s, Jim was President and Co-Founder of Sapient Health Network (SHN). SHN pioneered the concept of online consumer health communities, building some of the largest and most loyal groups on the Web today. The company’s service was named one of the “Seven Best Websites of 1998” by Business Week. In 1999, WebMD purchased SHN for $185 million in order to form the foundation of WebMD’s Consumer Health offering.

Alloy VenturesAfter WebMD, Jim served as Entrepreneur in Residence with Alloy Ventures of Palo Alto. While with Alloy, he participated in the investment process of one of Silicon Valley’s oldest venture firms.

Jim also co-founded the Metolian Resort — an outdoor vacation community designed on the Natural Step principles of sustainable energy, water, and trash management and focused on an outdoor, active lifestyle. The State of Oregon wrote legislation for Ecoresorts based on the Metolian design.

Portland Center StageHe is a former Board Member of Portland Center Stage (PCS) — a regarded regional theatre. During his tenure as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee PCS achieved recognition for developing and opening the first Platinum LEED performing arts building.

Strange but True
An avid outdoorsman, in 1999 he hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. In his twenties and thirties, he danced ballet and musical comedy with several regional dance companies. He graduated in 1984 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. In 1991 he received his MBA from Tuck School at Dartmouth.

Current Focus
Within consumer health, Jim’s concentration is on internet-oriented consumer health and wellness, performance sports, and nutrition. Within sustainable development his expertise is in vacation/hospitality communities, wellness amenity development, and outdoor recreation.
